About
I’m a pretty simple guy and come from an All-American family.
My Dad, Dr. C. Dwayne Shafer, grew up in west Texas roofing houses, pumping gas and showing sheep. After becoming the first in his family to attend college he went on to medical school and became a Family Practice Physician. In addition to his passion for medicine he was called to the ministry and has been a Primitive Baptist preacher for nearly thirty years. Due to a serious accident he is now disabled from the resulting back problems but continues in his ministerial efforts, maintains an active blog and is a loving and active husband and father.
Kathy Shafer, my mother, grew up an Airforce brat. When her dad retired from the Airforce, she came with the family to Houston, TX where she attended school to become a Dietician. While they were each pursuing their medical schooling, my parents met and got hitched. She is the strongest woman I know and is the glue that keeps our family together.
In August of 1986 I joined the family and over the next few years I became the oldest of three sons. Kris and Jacob followed with roughly two years between each of us. They’ve become great men in their own right and I’m glad to count them among my best friends.
As my parents began to consider the education that my brothers and I would receive, they became convinced that it would be impossible for anyone to have a greater interest in the teaching and eventual success of my brothers and I as they, as our parents, felt. Their desire to be heavily involved in our education prompted them to begin homeschooling us boys. It was not a decision that they took lightly (and I’m sure they often questioned the wisdom of it) but the sacrifies they made gave my brothers and I a world-class education and enabled me to become the men we are today. My mother sacrificed a promising career as a dietician and my dad committed to working harder and longer than he otherwise would have in order to pay for our educations twice: once to the state in taxes and again in real expense.
Until about 1998 we lived in a small neighborhood in Stephenville, TX but later bought property north-west of town. The ranch, dubbed “Cripplegate” by my dad, has been the homestead ever since and remains a frequent solace. During my teenage years I was able to work on the ranch raising cattle, riding horses, baling hay and fixing tractors. I ran a book resale business and played in the Ft. Worth Youth Orchestra with my brothers. I got my first BB gun when I was 4 and became a good shot so through the local 4-H club I began competing and was able to shoot in a large number of district and state rifle competitions.
Once I graduated high-school I enrolled in Hillsdale College. It had long been my dream to go there and like the stereotypical first-born I knew exactly what I wanted to study: Political Science and Economics. Over the ensuing four years I worked hard to learn as much as possible about those disciplines, in addition to the extensive coreĀ curriculumĀ that Hillsdale holds so dear. I became a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and was honored by being voted the Sweetheart of the Rho Gamma chapter of the Chi Omega Sorority.
Upon the completion of my time at Hillsdale I was hired and began work with American Majority as their North Texas Field Representative, a capacity I currently maintain. As a part of that organization I work to identify and train conservative candidates and activists in an effort to more effectively involve citizens in politics.
There is no doubt I’ve led a blessed life and it is my sincere hope that the remainder of my life will continue the trend. That said, I’m of the opinion that “to whom much is given, much is required.” For my part, I’m not content to simply exist or tread water, I want to use the abilities and passions that I was given and have cultivated for the betterment of my state and country.
In the end, that’s my goal. Wherever I can make the most progress towards that goal; that’s where I’ll be.
I hope you will enjoy this blog and my opinions that I share here. By way of a disclaimer, they are my own and should not be taken as representative of anyone or any organization other than the author. Please engage with me and let me know what you think of the blog!
